Supporting
Inclusion Through Trainer Education
Child
Care plus+ offers a variety of training-the-trainer options on
a fee for service basis. The following is a description
of the philosophy and background of this approach to inclusion
and training.
Effective
training on inclusion for community-based early childhood professionals
must be accessible and must support each learner's development
of inclusion knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
Child Care plus+ supports existing early intervention and early
childhood trainers in the development and delivery of quality
inclusion training through:
- providing
support, resources, and training for existing community-based
trainers.
- assisting
individuals, community groups, and state systems in the process
of identifying inclusion training strengths and needs.
- the
use of a flexible inclusion curriculum and training process
that can be customized to meet identified training needs.
- utilizing
appropriate adult education practices and promoting lifelong
learning as keys for excellence in providing quality training
and ultimately ensuring quality experiences for young children
with disabilities.
- highlighting
awareness of local, state, and national inclusion resources
including the Child Care plus+ Curriculum
on Inclusion.
- building
community collaboration to strengthen the role of child care
providers, early intervention professionals, early childhood
trainers, and in providing and advocating for quality inclusion.
A
Menu of Options for Trainers - Individualized training goals
are addressed through participant self-assessment and selection
from a range of training options. Methods for enhancing
training effectiveness can be requested specifically or effective
adult learning methodology can be embedded within training on
a selected inclusion topic. In addition, training sessions
are designed to meet a range of time frames, from a two-hour conference
session to a five-day intensive Institute on Inclusion: Training
the Trainer.
Enhancing
Training Effectiveness - Quality training
designed to create change in early childhood policies, procedures,
and daily practices contains essential elements of adult learning
theory and lifelong learning principles. Training can be
requested on specific topics including: translating adult
learning theory to practice, meeting diverse adult learning needs,
training for attitudes, developing lifelong learning dispositions,
planning meaningful activities, evaluation, and mentoring.
Inclusion
Training Topics - Specific knowledge,
skills, and attitudes necessary to successful inclusion have been
identified and explored in the Child
Care plus+ Curriculum on Inclusion: Practical Strategies for Early
Childhood Programs. This
curriculum forms the foundation of inclusion topics presented
by the training faculty including (but not limited to): introduction
to inclusion, recognizing young children's strengths and needs,
creating an accessible environment, building partnerships with
parents and families, being part of the team, maintaining a safe
and healthy environment, arranging the environment for learning,
increasing the playability of toys and play materials, guiding
the behavior of young children, facilitating young children's
communication and positioning young children.
